We watched in horror as rioters breached the Capitol and laid siege to the heart of our democracy. Congress, in session to certify the electoral result, was immediately evacuated for their safety. No one expected to see this, the mob scene, the anarchy. In a banana republic perhaps. But not here. Not the United States. Not our Capitol.
Yesterday’s event was universally denounced and condemned. As its fallout continues to unravel, one apparent casualty is the Christian church. Trump-supporters are bitter and disappointed. One person said she is not going back to her church because the election of Biden proves there is no God. She is not alone.
Anti-Trump people are not coming to church either. In their views, the hypocrisy of the church is in full display as the evangelicals give their unwavering support to a crooked racist. Already hit hard by the pandemic, churches across the country are now facing a reckoning for their roles in this political upheaval.
This is what happens when the church deviates from her calling to follow Jesus. It is time to repent. We have only one Lord and His name is Jesus. Back to the Bible. Follow Jesus. May the Lord have mercy on us.
